Courtyard

We have this unique area on the right side of our house with a stately brick wall on the front and bordered by our driveway and back patio.

At first we continued using it as a garden and worked hard 5 years ago redesigning it but it became impossible to maintain with weeds and the local deer feasting on our harvest!

This Summer I wanted to add a dining area to our patio right where Vivian's playhouse has been the past several years. When I asked her if she was ready to part with her playhouse. She sweetly requested to keep it just one more Summer. I happily agreed.

Needing the house moved gave me some ideas of how to make use of our now 'courtyard'.

I started by removing the raised beds, pavers and weeds as best as I could.

Then using generously donated newspapers I covered the area with a thick layer.

Note: newspapers made a great weed barrier!

Then I put a layer, with lots of overlap, of landscaping fabric secured with stakes.

I used a faux grass rug for a base under the playhouse and for a walkway.

I finished by covering with pine needles, adding an iron table and chairs my Mama gifted me, along with potted plants and a few statues.

We did keep one raised bed for herbs!

Next year we'll update it again ... stay tuned!
