A Color Drenched Mood!

Our home is bright and full of light but I find it adds depth to have one room that's rich and moody. A sitting room, library or office are all great spaces to style in a darker tone.

I set out to not only paint Ryan's office in a deep color but to 'Drench' it! I wanted everything but the floor painted in the same color for a full on submersion of the mood. I decided at the end not to paint the ceiling - I just couldn't paint any more ... and to be honest was aprehensive about it feeling like a cave and I couldn't fathom having to fix it!

Note: I despise painting and do not enjoy DIY one little bit ... but my labor is technically free so I wake up even earlier and stay up later to get it done and save dollars.

I chose the color 'Duke Gray' by Magnolia. It's not blue, not green and certainly not gray ... I really don't know how to describe it which was somewhat appealing.

The paint itself is Kilz which was the key to the project's success.

Note: Paint quality is EVERYTHING!!! I do not tape nor do I need to becuase the paint's viscosity adheares to the brush and surface without mess. The coverage and finish were outstanding (often allowing for 1 coat).

I started with the walls in a satin finish. The baseboards, doors, door frames, window frames and builtins were all painted in a semigloss finish.

It's key that trim and woodwork are in a semigloss as it has a sheen that differentiates it and prevents dust and debris from sticking/settling.

I refer to this room/paint project as 'the one that never ends' because I started it a long time ago but stopped midway leaving the builtins, windows and crown molding unfinished simply because I did NOT want to endure the work (not my typical attitude BUT see my first note above).

painting trim & builtins was hard and absolutely no fun!

It's finally finished and I couldn't be more pleased.

Before ...

I turned one side of the builtins into a bourbon bar

my family says I should be sharing

so that every family can have a loving lab!

I'd love new furtniture but that will have to come. This room was dramatically changed with just 2 gallons of paint and hours of my labor!

I encourage you to dress your home

beautifully with paint!
